Mahakali Caves
The Kondivita Caves, alternatively called the Mahakali Caves, represent a collection of 19 rock-carved structures erected between the 1st century BCE and the 6th century CE. Situated in the eastern precinct of Andheri, within Mumbai, this Buddhist enclave comprises two distinct clusters of caves: four to the north-west and fifteen to the south-east. Predominantly serving as viharas and dwelling spaces for monks, with the exception of Cave 9 in the southern cluster, which is a chaitya hall. Dating back to the 4th and 5th centuries, the caves in the north-west were predominantly hewn during that period, while those in the south-eastern cluster are of earlier origin. Additionally, the site encompasses rock-cut cisterns and vestiges of ancillary edifices.Caves are carved out of a solid black basalt rock. Historic or Architecture lovers must visit this place to explore ancient history.
